In this episode, Dr. Brent Robbins and I dive deeper into his work researching joy, or finding “the good life”. We go into the 4 kinds of joy and the existential tradition behind the modern understanding of what joy is. We get deep and nerdy about joy, but in the end try to find out where true joy comes from. We also see the four kinds of seeking joy in the great movie Groundhog Day. Dr Brent Robbins works at

Dr Brent Robbins was an Atheist when he studied psychology in graduate school. In evaluating patients, instead of hearing them talk about mental issues, many of them used language like they were lacking joy and meaning in their life, using transcendent language. This confused him at the time, but now makes more sense to him as a Catholic. Dr Robbins shares with us his journey in studying and practicing psychology and how it led him to his research in joy.

I sat down with my good friend Adam Schroeder who is the Director of the Robotics and Automation Design Lab at the University of Toledo in Toledo Ohio. We talked about what it means to be an engineer, what led him into engineering, and some of the joys of breaking things and trying to put them back together again.
After over 1 1/2 years, I am active again on YouTube with this new show Nerding Out, and with the return to YouTube I am bringing this show to the Podcast service near you! This is a short introduction episode to the Nerding Out series. We will be talking with scientists, mathematicians, philosophers, and many other nerds about what is important to them, how the see the world both through the lens of reason as well as the lens of faith. The world of the sciences and the world of faith do not conflict with each other, and many people bridge those two worlds every day. Those are the people we will be talking with. Come along on the adventure!
